FROM 18 - 25 SEPTEMBER 2010
MORE THAN 340 LOCATIONS IN 60 COUNTRIES WILL CELEBRATE
THE 14th ANNIVERSARY OF
EARTHDANCE – THE GLOBAL FESTIVAL FOR PEACE
When the whole world dances to celebrate life and to embrace
all traditions!
Aligned to the UN International Peace Week and dubbed “The
Dance Aid for the New Millennium” (The Evening Standard,
London), the mega-event’s mission is to foster an
environment of peace and harmony throughout the global
sphere while supporting non-profit humanitarian and peace-related
causes. In the spirit of "Think Global, Act Local," each
local Earthdance event donates at least 50% of their profit
to a local charity. Earthdance encourages music and entertainment
that is culturally inclusive.
2010 will be the advent of the 8 Days of Peace. The 8 days
of Peace starts on September 18 and ends on September 25
enfolding the International Day of Peace (Sept 21) in 2
global Prayer for Peace moments. The Global Focus for 2010
is: Embracing All Traditions.
SEPTEMBER 18, 2010: September 18th will kick off the week
with the traditional Earthdance Global event and the Prayer
for Peace.
The highlight of Earthdance on 18 September - where nearly
half a million people in over 60 countries join together
- is a simultaneous link-up, when every event across the
world plays the 4-minute Prayer for Peace track at 4pm
PST - morning in the Australian rainforest, midnight in
London, and sunrise over the Himalayas - a profound and
powerful unifying moment. In South Africa this will be
1am on 19 September.
SEPTEMBER 19-24, 2010: During the week, there will be an
ongoing new media Peace campaign through Earthdance TV
featuring long and short video "peaces" addressing
peace, wisdom, compassion and sustainable culture. We will
be calling out to the Earthdance community in our "What
Peace Means to Me" YouTube video campaign.
SEPTMEBER 25, 2010: September 25 will be the date of the
next globally synchronized Earthdance event and will be
focused on the Holy Land as religious leaders from all
faiths will be joining in the Prayer for Peace with the
international community. For more information, please visit
www.onepeacejerusalem.org. One Peace Jerusalem is an Earthdance
project.
EARTHDANCE SOUTH AFRICA
2010 is the 13th year that Earthdance will be celebrated
in South Africa and there will be events staged in Cape
Town. Kzn, Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga and Johannesburg.
EARTHDANCE JOHANNESBURG (GAUTENG)
For the last 13 years in Johannesburg, a small group of
private individuals have got together with little or
no budget, setting aside their personal careers & business, and
worked hard to make this happen on a voluntary basis
without remuneration –
To create an event that is :
global
charitable
family orientated
environmentally aware & educational
focused on healthy living
highly enjoyable
energetically entertaining
culturally South African
And with consciousness in mind!
MAIN EVENT – 18 SEPTEMBER
We are collaborating with other groups to create a Peace
drive throughout the day on 18 September. That evening
we propose to hold a dance event, preferably in the Johannesburg/Fourways
area with a few select dance-style bands and DJs, e.g.
Flash Republic, Napalma, Ryan Dent and Chris Palmer. We
will participate in the global linkup at 1am on Sunday
morning. If possible, it is our intention to webcast this
event, as is done with some of the countries participating
(and Cape Town).
25 SEPTEMBER
We are looking at either creating a daytime family picnic
event at a central city park venue on Saturday 25 September
or the other option is to hold a weekend event from Friday
24 (Heritage Day) to Sunday 26 SEPTEMBER.
Should we stage a weekend festival with camping, we propose
a small organic stage to feature world music bands and
other events and create a family event as per the previous
years, along the lines of :
Friday : Talks, activities, kids activities, conscious
cinema, ambient music and drumming.
Saturday : All above activities and more starting at about
11am. Full kids programme and kids performances.
4pm on Saturday 25 September – 2nd Global link-up
time when DJs in all locations play “Prayer for Peace” and
we focus our intent on The Holy Land where world religious
leaders will be congregating.
Main stage : Bands from soul, to world rhythms. Bands have
not been finalised yet, but over the years we have featured
the likes of : One Mighty Atom, Kathy Raven, U.F.O., Them
Particles, Kim Catholic, Frankie Beagle, SATYA and Achimoto.
Dance floor - DJs – Benji Blaze, Drift, Gwen C, Ganji,
Impulse, Sonic Druid and more!
Performers feature Hip Hop, Firedancers,, Dance Theatre,
Oriental Dancers and more!
Features of EARTHDANCE JOHANNESBURG :
Green Market : Exhibitors who demonstrate sustainable
living, reusable energy resources, bio fuels etc. plus
wellness and beautiful market goodies, a section for kid’s
products and educational toys, and food stalls;
Full bar as well as mead and brew bar; Coffee/tea and cakes;
Smoothies or Fresh Juices;
Going green : In 2008 we powered our dance floor on bio-fuel
and we will have recycle bins for refuse at the event.
Our recyling company also demonstrates and gets people
and kids involved in “Upcycling” where refuse
is collected and used to make art and other usable items.
Heart Space – Healing and pampering area with head
masseurs, reiki, readings etc.
Consciousness Cinema : Movies relating to environmental
and socio-political issues;
We would like to include as many of the above features
where possible for the event on 18 September as well. Usually
we only have one main event. 2010 is the first year that
Earthdance International have created the 8 Days of Peace.
With a result, it has given us the opportunity this year
to grow the awareness and put Earthdance on the map through
the main commercial dance event on Saturday 18 September
and to create a smaller event on the following weekend,
with the aim to create a larger festival next year and
in the future.
Earthdance is a charity event and our beneficiary charity
for 2010 will be Zizanani (see below for more info) who
will receive 50% of profits will be present on the day
and the kids from Diepsloot will also be involved pre-event
in creating artworks for the event/s;
Calling all ages and cultures to
- a music and dance festival to Embrace all Traditions!
Glenys van Halter started this year’s beneficiary – ZIZANANI
in 1993 with her motivation being that she was an abused
child and had to put her pain into action to assist other
children in similar situations. Through her hands-on approach
at grass roots level, Glenys has gained respect and trust
of the community members as well as brought the reality
of the terrible socio-economic conditions that people live
in to the attention of the authorities, businesses and
public at large. If South Africa is to prosper it is essential
that the youth in this country are educated and trained
in skills. Zizanani has created the Wings of Life Center
that contains a youth and training center, kitchen, nursery
school and primary school in the Diepsloot Community Settlement
as well as having established small crèches throughout
the settlement that are run by local mothers – ensuring
the young children are not left alone at home and vulnerable
while the mother is at work, leaving the children at risk
of becoming victims of abuse and rape.
Zizanani feeds 250 children a hot meal daily and ensures
that they are educated. There is also an HIV Home-based
Care project, which cares for families with HIV positive
members that are too sick to do anything for themselves.
A driver delivers hot meals to the 600 patients currently
being supported. Any funding received will go towards the
establishment of a Rejuvenation Center for victims of abuse
and violence where they can go to feel loved, protected
and safe and are able to get help and advice from social
workers. Also in dire need are seeds and compost for the
vegetable gardens, which help to feed the children daily.
Plants and trees are also needed for the project as well
as a first-aid kit for the crèche / nursery school.
In past years our beneficiary charities were Fruit & Trees
for Africa, Hospice in the West and Starfish Foundation
and we have donated R8000 to All Our Children First - a
sanctuary based in Edenvale for children suffering from
Aids and abused and abandoned children.
